Make the cut, make the shirt. Next level players from across Manchester have been in trials for our new centre at the famous Platt Lane Sports Complex at Manchester Metropolitan University. Platt Lane is steeped in football history and folklore, having been the training centre for Manchester City FC for 35 years.

City fans could watch their heroes in action from 1979 and they often did so in numbers, whilst children could wait by the entrance in the hope of grabbing an autograph. It also meant players were acutely aware of the feeling amongst the supporters. “I remember people watching through the fence, threatening us to win on a Saturday,” recalled Gareth Taylor in 2014, while ex manager Joe Royle famously said it felt like “feeding time at the zoo”.

The likes of First Team pro players Joe Corrigan, Paul Dickov and Giorgi Kinkladze all honed their skills at this Fallowfield base, before City upped sticks and moved to Carrington in 2001. The complex then became the home of the City Academy set-up for 13 years, with forty-five young players progressing through the ranks to make their first team debut. Amongst them were 2012 Premier League champion Micah Richards; Nedum Onuoha and Stephen Ireland, who racked up more than 100 appearances for the Club; Kasper Schmeichel, Daniel Sturridge and Shaun Wright-Phillips, who all won Premier League titles elsewhere.

Our Pro:Direct Academy players will all be trying to make their own pathway into the professional game at this historic venue this Summer 2020.
